I just loved the super simple purity and small scale of this antique sampler, nothing more than a small a to z, minus--in the old English manner--the j and and with what I believe is referred to as a printer's s before the regular s. And then a 5, perhaps the age of its maker when she did it. It seems possible this was cut down from a large one, as it appears there are a few stray brown threads near the top, but it's a bit hard to tell. The sampler, done in mossy green thread on linen, was then mounted a more finely woven linen. Earlyish 19th century I believe.
Framed in the beautiful frame I found it in, which a note from the seller called its original frame, but I don't know. Framed: 10 1/2" x 8 1/2". Sampler itself measures 4" x 2 5/6". All in very good condition.
