Revenge is Pleasure Only to a Mean Man, Chloe Mann's 1836 Penmanship Notebook

Regular price $85.00

Another week, another penmanship notebook, because I love them, and each is its own thing, and at this point I feel it my duty as well as my pleasure to find good homes for them. This is a nice early one, 1836, the work of a Chloe Mann, I believe of Massachusetts. Always interesting to me is the content of these--what more effective way of instilling the values of the day than making students write them over and over and over again? And some very good  ones here: "May thy virtues outshine the silver moon or morning star," "Sin and sorrow are inseparable companions," "Fatally enamored are sinners in their attachment to vice", and, my timely favorite: "Revenge is pleasure only to a mean man." Also, the not so fortuitous:"Governments are maintained by rewards and punishments."  With a very lovely cursive alphabet at the front of the notebook, and the calligraphic head of an eagle below her name on the blue paper cover.

8 1/8" x 5 1/8". 14 pages (leafs) filled front and back, with last couple of pages with only handwritten headers, as shown. Not all but a majority of pages documented.Executed with a very fine pen nib, so writing is not bold, but it is completely readable throughout and the whole thing is in very good condition
