First photo is a composite image, showing both sides of this 19th century treen snuff box--mouths and tails coming and going, and more etched into its belly! Wonderful fish form with open mouth and tail that looks like a mouth too, and then these finely etched and inked details, portraying a two headed serpent on one side, red tongues extended. That is the side that opens, from the bottom edge, with brass hinge holding the lid along the top. European in origin I believe--I've found a few other related examples out there, though each a little different.
6" l x 3 1/4" t x 1 3/4" deep. There is one very fine hairline crack running part way across the center lid as documented, which it took me a while to notice. Otherwise excellent antique condition.
