I really love an old carved out wooden box. Feels so visceral and direct, not messing around with jointed corners, just digging out the inside. And this old one with a sweet little carved knob at the end of the sliding lid. Could be that the unpainted pine lid replaced an earlier one, but if so has been with it for a very long time, lovingly done and perfectly fitting. Perhaps made to hold slate pencils, but good for whatever little odds and ends now, and a nice one for the top of a stack. With old red paint/stain on the box itself and and a warm dry patina to to the slide lid. Humble and honest, super warm presence, teeming with labor and love.
6 13/16" x 2 1/8" x 1 1/8" t. Looks maybe like a repair to a hairline split on the lid, running part of the way down the lid along one side--but very well done and really hard to detect. Lid fits snug and slides smoothly. All sturdy and sound.
