This one is a bit of a mystery to me, but one of my favorite finds of the week, and I think quite a special and wonderful thing. With beaded name along the top on one side, which looks like Marietta (with backward "e") Carl to me (but there may be a bit of loss on at the end), and dated 1834 at the bottom on the opposite side. Clearly beaded first in thin thin strips with this marvelous sampler-like sequence of designs (heart, diamonds, stars, crosses, arrows, key, etc.) then sewn onto the silk lined pouch. I purchased it from a dealer in upstate New York who had several Iroquois beaded pin cushions alongside it, but I have not been able to find another similar example for reference. I did find aq Marietta Carl born 1821 in Chester County, PA, but I am not at all sureof the connection.
3 3/4" t x 3 3/16" w. Good coverall condition, stable and generally sound, though one wants to be gentle handling it. One small gap between beaded strips on the dated side as shown, and wear/some loss to the interior lining, also as shown.
