I've had a few mid 19th century papered boxes of this sort, but the patterns and bright rainbow of colors on the paper here make this one exceptional. (The bright pink and yellow combo on the interior are very excellent too.) This one was specifically made as a small sewing box, with stencil painted velvet pin cushion on the lid. Hand-colored and hand-printed paper over cardboard, with ribbons connecting hinged lid to body of box so that it holds open without flopping back. A lovely and very well preserved example; there is a closely related one in the online collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
4 1/8" x 2 7/8" x 1 3/4" t. Very good condition, with some loss to what I imagine were more green on the pin cushion. Otherwise just minor wear/tiny losses to edges of trim and back of hinge, as documented. Reads bright and crisp and radiant.
