I have forever been eyeing examples of Georgian folk art horn beakers of this sort, with hunting scenes carved into their surfaces in a manner very akin to scrimshaw--but this is the first I've been so lucky as to bring home. And it's a great one, with one contiguous scene/narrative running all the way around, with bounding hare seemingly outpacing a mob of hunting dogs driving the action! (At least that's how I see it!) Fabulous rendering of hunters on their horses all the way around, too, and a farm house and gate along the top edge--for the end of the chase! Very early 1800s British.
3 3/16" t x 2 5/8" d. Horn cup with hand-carved decoration and inset bone bottom. One small irregularity along the top rim on one area--looks like a small chip and hairline crack, but seems just as much native to it as a flaw, I think not at all detracting.
