Vulgar Fractions Math Notebook with 1818 Letter from Boston

Regular price $50.00

I know these were found together at a New England estate by the dealer I purchased them from, so I'm keeping them as such, with the letter dated 1818, and I do believe the notebook dating to about then. For me the appeal is first and foremost the beautifully ink lettered, evocative and resonant phrase "Vulgar Fractions," animated with rich red watercolor. And then of course I'm always a sucker with these antique math/mensuration notebooks in general, with their lovely headers and all those gorgeous numbers lined up so perfectly. The letter is lovely here too, written in a looser hand, sent from a Susan Merritt in Boston to her aunt Susan in Woolwich, Maine. Mostly news of the wellness of various family members--"all the children are well except the babe who has the cancer in his mouth," and being very busy. I especially like the last line: "I must now close expressing myself."

Notebook 12 1/2 x 7 7/8", 18 pages total, 8 filled front and all but last on back, remaining pages blank. Letter all the way unfolded measures 12" x 7 3/4". One page of notebook with with watercolor header, as pictured. All in good condition--the ink writing in notebook crisp and clear and stronger than images convey (I cannot get my new phone to photograph ink on paper well at all!); scattered stains and toning to the letter.
