I spotted the old horse here first and was completely sold, then realized it was hitched (not so literally anymore) to this wonderfully graphic Abbotts milk wagon, too. With a little research I've learned that Abbott's was a prominent Philadelphia-area dairy and ice cream company famous for its home milk deliveries by horse-drawn wagon, to which this folk creation does great justice.
C. 1920s-30s I believe, with the horse constructed of several pieces of wood, with legs that appear to be made at least partially of lead, which is showing through the paint in a few spots (as detailed in photos.) With applied tin ears, horsehair tail, and two sets of eyes--one set visible from the sides, and the second set from the front! The cart is wood and tin with metal wheels, and hooks just behind the smaller front ones, to which chains on the horse's harness would have attached. (And still could with a bit of mending; I've liberated it due to a split in the leather near the buckle.) Terrific from all sides, of a substantial but not overwhelming scale, to my sensibilities completely charming.
Horse 8 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 2. Wagon 9" l x 9 1/4" t x 5 3/8" w. Good condition, nice patina, all the better in person. Break to the harness with chains as shown, but would not be very hard to mend. The wheels on the cart are well attached but a little wobbly/wonky--best to set somewhere rather than to try to roll it along!
