Very Rare Koos Van Den Akker Couture c. 1980 Framed Poster by Joel Resnicoff

Regular price $140.00

I happened upon this one in an antiques store in Vermont the other day and it immediately felt both special and familiar, as well as just a terrific poster, so I took it home with me. I quickly realized the Resnicoff, who signed the image along the lower right edge, was Joel Resnicoff, who created similar graphic illustrations for Espirt, which appeared on a series of shirts c. 1984--I think I might even have had one, hence the familiar feeling! (Resnicoff worked as a fashion illustrator on the staff of Women's Wear Daily, making a name for himself in the fashion industry, then went on to work as a freelance illustrator, department store window designer, and street artist in the East Village during its heydey in the early 80s. He died of AIDS in 1986.)

I can find no other copy or citation of this poster out there anywhere, produced for Koos Van Den Akker, who opened his first shop in NYC in 1971 and a second store in Beverly Hills in 1978 at the height of his popularity. That store was short-lived, so I believe this poster must date the somewhere between 1978-1980 or so. The collaboration of Koos and Resnicoff on this poster at that particular time makes it feel like quite a special marker of a very particular moment in fashion and pop culture at the turn of the decade and quite a collectible thing.

Framed as found: 24” x 18 5/8” and very very good condition with just a bit of very minor rippling along the top edge, not detracting. Frame is vintage, simple black metal, and suits it just right. My photos show the poster with a bit more yellow in tone than it is; paper is cream. There is no discoloration or fading to the paper, it's just my lighting conditions.
