I am always looking for oversized whimsies, especially, which feel more like sculptures or tabletop architectures than little carvings. This is that, and unlike another I've seen, with the two balls connected to a central post, such that they remain forever at the center of their cages as opposed to bouncing around. The post is a separate piece of wood--on which the balls can be turned on the horizontal axis--though I think likely carved from the same block, and perhaps carved in place, as I'm not sure how one would have gotten it in there. And the grain of the wood creates concentric circles at the center of each ball, which feels rather miraculous! With a terrific warn dry wood patina on the pine, I would guess early 20th century on this one. Very nice!
10" tall x 2 3/8" wide and deep, and in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or other issues. It can be stood from either end.
