I saw this wonderful clay head in New Hampshire in the booth of a dealer I love but left without him--then, as is sometimes the case, he would not let me go, and I could not get him out of my head, either! Happily, we reunited. He's a brick clay end of day piece, made from left over clay by a brick factory worker, and looks to have been signed (monogrammed) and dated on his base on the front side. It looks like '99 to me, as in 1899, and the initials maybe AT. Between those eyes, which look as though closed, and that slightly open, very delicately shaped mouth, he looks about as gentle and serene and dreamy as could possibly be. And at some point it appears that someone did some painting nearby, giving him a light smattering of white paint across the face, which makes it seem as if that mouth were open to taste a falling snowflake. Lovely.
3 1/2" t x 2 9/16" w x 2 3/4" d. Good antique condition, no chips or cracks that I can see, just the smattering of white paint as evident and noted.
