This was, happily, a week for dogs, and a happy surprise indeed to find this Bauhaus era German enamel painted, brass lidded box in New Hampshire with three very excellent black and white puppies peering over a very excellent green wall. I've had a couple of modernist-art deco German enameled boxes from this period, but rarer to see a figural one...and what better than puppies?! Rendered in a very art deco sort of a way. Some loss to the matte green paint on the front and back facing sides of the box itself, but the lid is perfect; I'd display it standing on its side like a painting.
4 1/2" x 3 1/4" x 1 13/16" t. Paint loss to sides as documented. Brass with wood lining to as evident, with a bit of loss to the wood along the front edge. Hinges in good shape and lid opens and closes smoothly; I think there must just be a bit of minor bending that makes the lid rise just a hair on the left side (only evident when viewed from the side), as documented; someone handier than me could probably fix that.
