Thomas Stokes Have Lett 10 Old Sheep and Five Lambs, Charming 1777 Handwritten Contract

Regular price $85.00

This is one of very favorite finds of the week, and makes me very happy, including for being able to vividly imagine Thomas Stokes' ten old sheep and five lambs, appraised at  the rate of 20 shillings "apease"  which he "lett" in exchange for one pound of "wooll" for each one, each year, for two years. Dated May 26th, 1777, less than one year after America's Declaration of Independence, when colony-issued pounds, shillings and pence were still in circulation in the U.S. Found in and of New England, I believe.

7 5/8" x 5". Irregular left and bottom edge as evident. Black ink on laid, with ink as strong as if written yesterday and paper in good condition.
