I love a snapshot of a television screen, pointing us to a single second in time, and bringing us straight into the content on what's playing, while also delivering a lot of information in what surrounds it; a TV is nothing if not a frame. And a Sumo wrestler at the center of a mid century American television screen sure feels like an apt portrait of the culture. Perfectly, simply captioned, as if looking toward the future and imagining a time when the ancient Japanese sport of Sumo wrestling, long preceding the founding of America, would be a forgotten form. I think there is so much one could write about this, for me it is another example of a photo that distills a whole world of information, including a whole web of internal and cultural conflicts and contradictions.
