Set of Three Old Fishmonger Delivery Slips with Great Graphics

Regular price $30.00

These were really fun to find together this week in Maine; I’m listing as a set as I think they are really best kept together, with wonderfully complementary (and just great) graphics and together comprising a nice piece of fish mongering history. I believe these were delivery slips, which would be used to tag deliveries of freshly caught fish to the businesses that would sell them--in this case Chas. Lyons (i love the lion logo with "Fresh Water Fish" printed over it) and Star Fish Co. on Peck Slip at Fulton Market in lower Manhattan (the history of Peck Slip itself, once an active docking place for boats, is pretty fascinating) and Mantia Bros on Atlantic Ave in Boston. The reverse sides would be completed by the fisherman; two of these show an address of Harrington Maine, and I believe were filled out by two Maine-based fishermen who likely regularly delivered to these shops but never used these particular slips. Happily, they were perfectly preserved. Pretty fabulous I think.

Chas Lyons: 5 5/8” x 3”. Star Fish Co: 5 7/8” x 2 13/16. Mantia Bos: 4 5/8” x 3 1/8”. Sold as a set, all in excellent condition. Earlyish 20th c. I believe.
