Samuel Wood Gaylor c. 1920s Watercolor Portrait Nude

Regular price $95.00

One final drawing from a small collection of works by American artist Samuel Wood Gaylor (1883-1957) found at Brimfield this summer; the dealer I bought them from had purchased a body of work by Gaylor and his wife Adelaide Lawson from a one time neighbor of the couple on Long Island. There are some a few stray blue pastel marks (on her face) and a few faint charcoal marks(along right edge) marks here, but I don't care, I think a very lovely and elegant watercolor, with a a bit of a Modigliani feeling to her, too. There is lots out there about Gaylor and his work (which was included in the 1913 Armory Show, critical in establishing American Modernism), including a wonderful, expansive 2021 review by Roberta Smith for the NY Times about a solo exhibition of his large scale paintings at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington NY.

14 1/2" x 9 7/16". Watercolor and graphite on light weight, finely ribbed paper.  A few dark marks are detailed and general light wear. Has the feel of a pastel drawing as much as it does of a watercolor.
