It is dangerous for me to go to top notch shows with really excellent photography dealers (and paper dealers too)--I could spend my whole life savings quickly. Such was the case at the Boston Antiquarian Book Fair last week, so many wonderful things. I came home with a handful of photos that I found too perfect in one way or another to walk away from. My disposition is toward images I myself would like to live with and think I would never tire of looking at and thinking about. Like this one, with large (quite beautiful!) potato set next to hat for scale, and with a book under the hat giving it a little boost! Makes me think of equivalencies of all sorts. And has a bit of a Dada/Surrealist quality to it too. With the objects laid out atop a newspaper, providing context for posterity--a 1907 copy ofthe Otago Witness, a New Zealand weekly published 1851-1932, particularly popular in rural areas where poor access prevented newspapers being delivered daily. And with an excellent pattern on that wallpaper providing the background. To my eye just a perfect thing.
