Earlyish 20th century, and surely once part of a quilt that was carefully taken apart. I just really like this particular embroidered girl, looking so pensive as she sits on her unseen chair or stool, as if watching and waiting for the arrival of something or someone. I've gone back and forth as to what it is she has in her hands and lap--a leash? (and so implying it a dog she is waiting for), or a sewing hoop? jump rope? or a bowl and whisk, making her, embroidered on flour sack cloth, ready to mix up some pancakes?! Kind of nice the ambiguity.
10 1/4" x 10" and in very good condition, with nice softening from age and washing, to the color of the border especially. No lost stitches or notable stains, double layered.
