Carved Orange Folk Art Lion with Bared Teeth

Regular price $55.00

There is quite a rich and diverse history of Pennsylvania folk art lions, the 19th century redware pottery lions of John Bell perhaps most famous of all, but many wonderful interactions, including some marvelous fraktur watercolor versions. I found this small carved and painted wooden lion at a favorite shop in Lancaster Country and presume it's of Pennsylvania too, while channeling a little bit of the Chinese foo dog and a definitely with strong similarities to German Erzgebirge in the manner of the carving too. Great bright color, great bared fangs, and of course that great, classic loop of a tail.

3 1/8" l x 15/16" W X 2 1/16"t. I'm not entirely certain but would guess ealier than later 20th century.
