I have be come so much interested in the patina on old paintings, becoming at least as much about their object hood as the image they portray. And my favorite of all is old pool paintings on wood panel; there is just an atmospheric-ness and luminosity about them that is its own very special thing. This 19th century seascape is a case in point. Plenty of scattered paint loss (with underpainting showing through), which could be seen as detracting, but I find it entirely congruent with the seascape represented, as if the painting itself has endured through the storms of years. It's definitely got an aura, and a glow about it, and to my eye is just a beautiful thing.
Perfectly framed, as found, and as I would guess it has lived much of its life. Framed: 8 11/16" x 7 1/8". Painting itself: 5 3/8" x 3 11/16". With a hanging loop on back. I'll put another nail on the back side to better secure it.
