Moody 1939 French Watercolor of Chateau in Countryside

Regular price $30.00

There are handwritten notes in French on the reverse side of this watercolor, dated May 1939, which identify the subject as the facade of Château d'Annecy (a castle in the old French town of Annecy) and suggest it was painted on the spot, in stormy weather, contributing to what the writer describes as a bit of a sinister quality. And indeed, I like this watercolor for its moodiness, making the structure feeling like a character in a gothic novel, and one that has weathered the weather  since medieval times.

8" x 6 3/8", good. condition, watercolor on natural colored paper, writing in ink in reverse. One minor surface abrasion to paper at upper left corner.
