What sold me on this 19th century snuff box is the juxtaposition between the fineness of its decoration and the clearly hand-scratched "Mary." I thought it likely that Mary did this herself, but on the underside of the box in what appears to be the same hand one can just make out "To Mummy"!
The box itself shows wear including some bending to the sides and bottom, but I think is quite lovely still--ideally destined for another Mary, though my house at least is filled with things monogrammed for other people, which makes me feel like I'm always surrounded by interesting company from across time!
3 3/8" long x 1 5/8" deep x 1 1/16" tall. There is one minor tear to the upper back corner. Hinges are in great shape and lid closes flush.
