I purchased this one from an excellent dealer in Japan based on photos of a few pages then waited patiently for it to arrive; opening it felt like receiving a great gift, page after page of delights. C. 1830s-40s, sumi ink on what I believe is washi paper, each page/two page spread featuring birds of different varieties. I've documented it comprehensively so photos give a very good sense, though as always these things are better in hand! I love how absolutely full of life and individual character these birds feel, with a wonderful combination of looseness and specificity to the drawings. Super expressive and very confidently done, with a sense of keen and also very joyful observation.
10 3/4" x 7 5/8". 19 leafs including covers, all fully filled front and back (so 38 10 3/4" x 7 5/8" pages of drawing.) Curled corners and general toning but ink very strong, no notable tears, and string binding holding in good shape.
