Very lovely, a feast of delicate pinks and purples, blues and gold.. a perfect valentine I'd say, including for the quiver of arrows! I would guess that this elegant pair on horseback is meant to represent Sultan Baz Bahadur(r. 1555-1562) and his Hindu shepherdess Queen Rupmati, very often portrayed hunting on horseback as here (according to the tale she kept her husband from straying by joining him on hunts.) But the genders of these two, at least to my inexpert eye, seem a bit ambiguous. (And of course I am all for ambiguity!) This miniature appears to have been painted over an older manuscript page, but the manner and fineness of the painting say antique to me, I would guess late 19th century though I am not an expert.
9 1/4" x 6 1/8". Painting area 4 1/16" x 3 1/8". Very good condition, reads crisp and bright. Manuscript page mounted to board, with another page, stained and showing some tears, mounted to the reverse.
