Liberty-esque Antique Grulich Pointing Angel

Regular price $75.00

I took her for Lady Liberty before I realized she was an angel, and I love the conflation. This is a Grulich nativity figure--not too far a cry from German Erzgebirge carvings, but their own thing, created in what is now called Králiky in the Czech Republic, at the foot of the Eagle Mountains in Northern Bohemia. Apparently, Emperor Joseph II. forbade any Christmas nativities in churches, after which, beginning in the early 1800s, the Grulich area began a massive cottage industry production of nativity figures for home use.  I believe our pointing angel here dates to the late 19th/very early 20th century.

4 1/4" t; based 1 1/4" x 1 3/8".  Wood and plaster/composition.  Good condition, with light surface wear as evident and one small hole at the front of the base, as shown.
