I've been continuing to keep an eye out for old ex voto retablo, and find myself most attracted to the sparer among them, the older the better, like this great large one on tin dating to 1872. Along the bottom the text detailing the healing of the bed-ridden figure at left is largely faded, but the alligatored creamy white paint that remains is gorgeous, and one can still make out the year. I love the white dust ruffle on the bed and bolster-like pillow propping up the head of the sick figure, with wonderfully expressive face in profile and bandage or compress across the forehead. And then Jesus with bright white crown of thorns on the cross, with blue base to match the bedcovers and curtains, detailed with ties and fringe. The ground is a very dark brown, which shows a bit more like black in photos.
10 1/8" x 14". Two small holes at the top for hanging. Some paint loss and scrapes as pictured, and minor bends to the bottom corners, all to the good I think.
