Impossibly Fine, Beautiful Condition Antique Mi'kmaq Curlicue Basketry Pin Cushion

Regular price $150.00

I have had just a couple of antique Mi'kmaq basketry pieces executed in this manner--both of those with the basketry covering wooden barrels, and those, like this, completely amazing me for the fineness of the work. This is just over six inches wide, meaning that those tiny twists of the ash splint--sometimes called "porcupine curls"--are very very tiny indeed. And here with some of the splints dyed red and green, bringing the patterns of the weaving itself into relief, and with a real painterliness to that color, enhanced by its patina. Stunning. And in gorgeous antique condition, without a single lost curl or stitch that I can see. The velvet covering the pin cushion has softened to a nice reddish purple, but the underside reveals its original, very bright color!

6 1/8" l x 4" w x 3" t. Excellent antique condition, later 19th century I believe. Sturdy and sound, no losses at all as far as I can see and very beautiful softening to the colors with age.
