I went to Cohoes, NY to find this one, but it originated in my neck of the woods, on the North Shore of Boston, in Beverly NY. Reminds me in many ways of Spencerian calligraphic drawings, but folkier, and I especially love the handling of the jockey's face, with all those tiny ink dots making it look almost as if he were wearing a mask or that much of his face were covered in stubble, which lends a bit of eeriness to the drawing in an interesting sort of way. Just my sort of thing, and I don't mind that he's lost the end of his whip, either! C. 1860 or so, I believe; I found a Fred Scruton born in Augusta, Maine in 1851 but not one from Beverly Mass--though not too far afield.
15 7/16 x 12 1/4, ink on watermarked, lined paper. Losses to the upper and lower left corners as evident, along with a few small tears and creases. There are a few old clear tape mends plus a brown paper patch on reverse, of just the sort I love to see--a winning pair and prized drawing!
