This is an antique bookplate from a 1903 Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution Annual Report featuring original drawings of Hopi Kachina “drawn by native artists.” These were primarily done by a 30 year old Hopi man named Kutcahanauu, or White Bear, who was hired by American anthropologist Jesse Walker Fewkles to visually record the hundreds of different kachinas revered by the tribe. I wish I had every plate in it as I think the drawings are extraordinary, but I just found this and one other, listed separately, which purchased from a seller of rare books in Maine.
Page size: 11” x 7 1/4”. Good condition, with an old taped repair to a tear along the right edge. Blank reverse. There is a little sheen to the nice weight paper.
