One of two stereoviews today, both among my very favorites I've had. At first glance I took these for a cluster of button mushrooms, but a closer look, and the printed list on the reverse of the card, reveals these as a collection of hail stones from "the Great Storm of 1870." The compounding of the strange phenomenon that is hail with the fact of these particular hail stones having been captured as documents of a specific "Great Storm" before melting away, and photographed in a perfectly matter of fact (but inherently super poetic!) sort of a way, to be viewed in stereo, all makes me glad. Produced by Knowlton Bros of Northhampton MA and a scarce one; I turned up an image of just one other, held in the collection of the NY Public Library.
6 15/16 x 3 3/8 and in good condition, general edge wear and some fading to the lavender card.
