SOLD Fabulous c. 1950s Folk Art Make Do Salt and Pepper Shakers with Painted Cats

Regular price $110.00

The existence of these crazy things makes me super happy. They were created from full sized glass soda bottles--one Sun Crest Orange Soda, the other Hires Root Beer, both c. 1950s--with a few holes punched into the caps to turn them into (very large) salt and pepper shakers. I assume they are both meant to be cats, though the Salt looks a bit like a raccoon, too. Their size and their make-do resourcefulness makes me think perhaps they worn born at a restaurant, perhaps one with picnic table dining; Casco bottling was based in southern Maine, so perhaps they accompanied lobster rolls and fried clams! Whatever the case, what a pair, from their funny faces to their tails wrapping around the backs. Love.

7 3/4” t x 2 1/4” d ea. Very good condition. I have not tried to remove the caps, which are on snugly, but I am sure they would come off should one wish to remove them. I think better to place these on a pedestal though!
