SOLD Fabulous Antique Pennsylvania Folk Art Box with Painted Lion (One Hinge Loose)

Regular price $195.00

I know this box was found in Allentown, PA and it sure seems Pennsylvania folk art to me, with a fraktur-esque quality to this fantastic lion (with marvelously wild, expressive face that keeps reminding me of a rooster, too!) Late 19th c. or so I would guess, with a terrific surface best appreciated through detail photos--yum. Dark green painted ground, border of red polka dots over creamy white paint, and the lion with what I believe is a coat of varnish over cream and red paint that makes it quite electric, as if about to jump off the panel and spring to life! One hinge is detached from the body of the box due to a split along the back as documented; one could remove the top and treat it like a painting on panel, but it sits flush and square and the box is in overall very good shape so really no need to do a thing but love it as it is!

10" x 5 3/4" x 3 11/16" t. Aging to the surface, all to the good. One hinge detached and split along part of the back as noted and documented.
