Exquisite Diminutive (but Very Dense) 1850s Hair Wreath Memento Book

Regular price $375.00

I have been coveting one of these since I first discovered the existence of them, but have waited for exactly the right one, and this for me is exactly that. Often one finds these in pretty rough shape, but this one has been beautifully preserved, with few losses, and most every page densely packed. It is hard to grasp from photos, but this is quite small in scale--with that intimacy amplifying the sense of fineness and delicacy to each individual hair lock wreath, each annotated with the name of family member or friend from whence it came, and with a colorful bit of bright blue or orange paper, some cut into the shape of hearts, tethering each wreath to the page. The outer binding was repurposed from a book titled The Divine Law of Beneficence, with a pasted down note on the inside cover page dating it to c. 1850. I have not spent much time trying to place the names included (many of the Roberts family as well as Downers, Kindels, Hubbards, etc.) but there is a lot here to dive into. Every page in this is a beauty.

5 3/8" x 4". 14 pages (leafs), almost entirely full on both side: 21 page faces full, about 100 hair locks total. Very beautiful antique condition, all the more beautiful in hand, super special feeling amplified by the scale of it.
