Elaborately Hand-Embroidered Panel with Metallic Thread, Presumed Antique Greek Ottoman (Epirus)

Regular price $95.00

So many amazing textiles in the world, and the amount of skill and labor invested in sewing one square inch of something like this just amazes me. (Look at the back!) I am not an expert but am pretty certain this is Ottoman, and specifically Greek Ottomon, from the Epirus region, where Ottoman embroidery traditions blended with Greek cultural motifs and Byzantine heritage. Used for both domestic display and ceremonial purposes, I believe this is likely one section from a larger panel, or quilt of sorts, possibly a prayer rug, with the embroidery executed on very thick, sturdy woven cloth. (Last photo shows what I have found described as an 18th century example from a prayer rug--very closely related.)  My guess is this is 19th century but I am not an expert.

12" x 9 3/4". Very good condition, no damage or loss at all that I can see, just a bit of curling and minor fraying to the heavy backing fabric along the edges.
