I am not a great expert on portrait miniatures, but am pretty certain this one, of a lovely young woman in empire gown and high ruffled collar, is French, c 1810s-20s. Curiously, it seems as if the painter preferred painting patterned fabric to rendering a hand at bottom, though what looks like the edge of a sleeve cuff peeks out to the right, so perhaps there is a story there...maybe our sitter lost a hand, who knows? There is a little damage/loss to the right and bottom edges of the painting (see details) which looks to me to have been executed on bone. With what appears to be original paper back visible on reverse, with pressed red wax seals on either side.
In original frame: 3 7/8" x 3 7/16; portrait itself 2 3/8" x 1 7/8". Losses along bottom and right edges of painting as detailed in photos, Stable and sound, finely done and lovelier in person. (Shot here with some magnification which makes it look a bit less crisp than it appears to the eye.)
