Love at first sight with this one; he just immediately felt like an old friend to me. And a curious one in my experience too--a miniature ink and watercolor portrait on a CDV card, the card stamped "H. Terry, Main Street, Sag Harbor, L.I" on reverse. Whether painted over an early photo portrait, or over an engraving, or painted on a blank card, I am not entirely certain, but his hair and collar look early 1800s as opposed to c. 1860s to me, so perhaps there's a photo under there of an earlier likeness. I like the mystery, and the effect of this very small disembodied head floating against a blank field, and the visceral-ness of that blank ink and rosy pink of those cheeks!
4" x 2 1/2". Very good condition, with some general light smudges and stains, minor and not at all detracting.
