Between the birds and the star and the color, my guess is that this carving in Pennsylvania Dutch. And with a good amount of wear around the perimeter, suggesting a good lot of handling, and the birds facing in every direction, I might guess it served a functional purpose, perhaps as a lid (or as a print block?) I am not sure. The wood is old, pine I believe, and the manner of the hand-carving makes it feel like my favorite sort of drawing. Highly graphic but also very intimate feeling.
Approx 10" x 10 1/8", not perfectly round. Wear around the edges as evident, all to the good in my opinion.
