I'm a sucker for a super naive antique sampler, and really really love the combination of very naive and very aspirational; no small thing to attempt letters as fancy as many of these...and, really, even more of a feat to manage a whole stretch of them backwards! I know from the seller I purchased this from that it came from Pennsylvania, c. mid 19th century I believe. The ground is very loosely woven, with unfinished edges but the embroidered borders in a charming array of motifs.
20" x 10". Some fraying to the edges and with loose red threads left hanging on reverse side (this is how it was made.) Nothing precious feeling about this but I find it very charming.
