Cobb's 1853 Speller with Hand-sewn Fabric Spine, Animated Endpapers and Excellent Engravings

Regular price $40.00

Another week, another early speller--there are a whole lot I pass by without a second thought, but I'll always scoop a special one. Like this one, with great yellow paper cover and hand-sewn, fabric covered spine--Cobb's First Book, published by John H Simon, Philadelphia. Once owned by an Amaline Kahler (I believe) who wrote her name in 1858 and filled the inside cover with inked letters and marks. More on the back inside cover too, which also shows a hand-stitched mend. And then some really fabulous woodcut engravings--very excellent pig and rat and cat and many more.

5 3/4" x 3 7/8", 36 numbered pages, but 5-8 appear to be lost and 9-10 is loose.  Plenty handled and worn, tears and flagging to others, but really a sweet one.
