Sometimes a sweet and cheering old folk painting is just what's in order, and this one is very much that, making me very happy when I found it in inland southern Maine this week. Who can argue with fluffy yellow chicks and lushly ripe red strawberries? I love the big green cabbage leaf serving as a basket for the berries, too--and the red dripping from the greedy little beaks of these two! Great carved wooden frame too in mellow gold paint, I believe original to it.
Framed--I believe original to it--as found: 14 5/8" x 10". Oil on artist board, very good antique condition, late 19th/early 20th c. I believe. Some gold paint loss to the frame as documented--very much of a piece with it, and the carved wood frame is great!
