C. Hubner's Antique Handmade Stamped Stair Saw

Regular price $60.00

One of three tools today found together in Midcoast Maine, I believe all from one collection; perhaps it is this cozy-homey time of year that has me particularly appreciating old handmade tools, but I find this saw, with whale tail handle, quite a lovely thing, and, as with machinist made calipers, love an old tool with the original owner's name stamped on it, evincing a sense of pride and value. This is a stair saw, used for making precise, shalllow cuts at a fixed depth. One typically sees these now with an adjustable depth stop, but the blade here is fixed in place. (It does seem possible that there were once small screws attaching the blade where the nails are now, allowing for some adjustment; I am not entirely sure, but these nails seem to have been in place a good long whole and hold the blade tightly, not a hair of looseness of wiggle.

9 3/4" x 3 1/4" x 3/4". Well used, rich patina, darkening to the wood just where it should be. With a hole in the tail handle for hanging.
