I come across a good number of Wabanaki (NE Woodlands Native American confederacy of tribes comprised of Abenaki, Mi'kmaq, Maliseet/Wolastoqey, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot) baskets as I run around New England and especially Maine, so it takes a special one at this point to stop me. As this one did. I do not believe I have EVER seen one with such fat sweetgrass braids, and woven in an almost entirely uninterrupted pattern but for the very small red splint center. It makes it feel both unusually lush and also minimalist--rather like a Shaker-Penobscot hybrid! With the splints forming the structure/warp of the basket dyed green, showing very soft color on the exterior, but the original shade inside. This would have been made as a sewing basket, and was found with a beaded ornament and a key inside, which I will send along.
9" d x 2 1/2" t, excellent condition, no losses at all that I can see, sound and sturdy.
