A beautiful, carefully carved antique book shaped box, the quiet loveliness of which photos don't quite capture. I wish I were better at identifying woods--the wood in this case a dense, straight grained hardwood of quite a beautiful ashy light brown-gray. And a bit unusual--opening via a flat, perfectly fitted slide lid on one side, which almost disappears when closed. With two slightly different sized interior compartments. All carved out from one piece of wood. Late 19th/early 20th c. American I believe.
5 3/16" x 2 1/2" x 1 1/2". General light wear, a bit of roughness/very minor loss along the edge of the slide where it meets spine of the book, and a bit of very old wear/minor loss to one raised band on the spine--all as detailed, and none I think detracting. Sturdy and sound.
