I'm not someone who goes gaga over babies, but I did swoon when I spotted this one--quite a charmer of a painting and quite a radiant, full of life and breath, child! Also nice that the back of the un-stretched canvas is stamped "S.N Dodges Artist and Painter's Supply Store, 189 Chatham St, corner of Oliver St, N York, which seems to have operated 1820s-1850s or so (as per the Met Museum) so pretty certainly of that period. Better in hand, quite delightful.
14 3/4" x 12 3/4". Clearly a fair bit of wear and some paint loss, which to me feels all of a piece with it. Really no canvas loss (details show those corners are just folded behind) so it could be stretched again, or easily framed like a drawing.
