Summer may be nearly over, but dreams of a basket of freshly picked strawberries never cease, and I love the super graphic pop of this painting. It was done on tin, painted on very smooth, flat black the ground. The subject and manner of the painting, and the frame in which it appears to have lived for quite some time, make me think late 19th c., though in remarkably good condition, with just a very little bit of craquelure and light surface scratching to the black and a tiny bit of loss along the left edge where it meets the frame. Nicely done detail on the strawberries and great drama to the woven splints of the basket!
Framed, as found, in grain painted frame with wood backing: 11 5/8" x 8 7/8". Sight: 9 5/8" x 6 13/16".
