Arms Open, Sweet Old Carved Folk Art Figure in Polychrome

Regular price $110.00

A very sweet one, giving me great joy to find, looking in part as if embodying a certain lost-ness, but also as if it spreading his arms in readiness of a hug. Very tender, and hugely empathetic, and a bit melancholic, even existential feeling, too. There appear never to have been hands, just these stubs at the ends of the arms, which seems just right for the gesture, and in keeping with the naivete of it all. Purchased from a dealer in my neck of the woods and better in person, with a rich depth to the color and terrific patina to the surface.

5 1/2" t x 4 " wide (outstretched arms) x 2" d at base. The feet appear to have been mended near the ankles, but it almost just looks like some black paint bled down from the pants. Numbered on the underside 50.1978--which I take for acquisition number; he seems earlier 20th c. to me.
