James McFarland's c. 1900 Speller and Word Book with Good Endpage Lettering and Scribbles

Regular price $20.00

I am forever opening old spellers to check their end pages for names and drawings and doodles--spaces of endless expressive potential! This one was once the possession of a young James McFarland, of Lebanon, Tennessee--which is precisely where I found it. I find the lettering spelling out the name of his hometown, surrounded by many iterations of his name and and various marks and shapes and numbers etc. pretty beautiful. More at the end, too, looking like the work of a younger sibling or young child who got ahold of it somewhere along the way. And of course lots of good works inside the speller, too, which shows annotations here and there, mostly days of the week--one assumes corresponding to when those lessons took place.

7 1/16 x 5 x 1/2. Good much used condition, sound,  binding in good shape. Tear to right bottom corner of front end page, as evident. Title page torn out at some point.
