Antique Gravel Covered, Wire Hinged Folk Art Box with Original Green and Red Painted Interior

Regular price $80.00

I really love this one. I seem to recall seeing a box or two covered like this in what I only know to describe as a sort of fine gravel, but I don't know when that was a thing to do. Whether that surface is original to the box or applied a bit later I am not sure, but the bottom of the box shows much softened original green paint, and I am pretty certain the green and red painted interior are of the same age, original to it, as are the wire hinges--all 19th century I believe. I love the contrast between interior and exterior, making it feel like a surprise to open, and also like a metaphor--gruff surface, joyful inner life!  And really quite crisp and smart looking all the way around.

8 3/8” x 4 1/2” x 4 3/4” t. Very good antique condition, sturdy and sound, lid sits flush and wire hinges in good shape. Light wear to the surface and to the interior paint along the edges, just as it should be. One slightly darker patch on the lid and maybe a little staining, pretty minor.
