Everything about this mirror with bird (original to it) is a a little wonky, which is much of what I love about it! The carved and polychromed bird veers just a hair to one side (which seems to be how it was made) and shows paint loss in a couple of spots, and the mirror is all kinds of aged--all of which adds up to a thing with, to my eye, a whole lot of charm and personality. I know this was found in Pennsylvania and looks Pennsylvania German to me. The bird itself perches very sturdily atop the mirror, with its base extending like a bracket over the top and then screwed onto the back. A great one for greeting visitors near the front door, I'd day, but certainly making a statement anywhere!
20 7/8” x 11 3/4” x 2 7/8”, sturdy and sound. Photos document a few losses and wear to the surface of the bird and aging to the mirror, which shows a stable crack at far lower left.
